Mr Mark Stewart Please

Posted in Uncategorized on July 27, 2008 by lately

Last Saturday I was driving to my fave secondhand record store listening to
The Joint and as I was pulling up to the bumper baby, radioshow host Fraser was introducing a track off of the new Mark Stewart album ‘Edit’ (a cover of The Yardbirds “Mr You’re a Better Man Than I”). Fraser mentioned that I play Stewart on my show and yes this is true I frequently play Stewart and his mates at ‘On U Sound records’ on the show, they are a staple of the shows sound—least of all ’speaker-scientist’ and producer Adrian Sherwood.

I reflected on Stewart for a moment and realised that his provocative/intelligent/political dub is essentially ‘hidden’ in popular music culture, yet he and his cohorts (The Maffia) have influenced many. The first CD recording I owned was “As The Veneer of Democracy Starts to Fade”, it sounds like the entire desk was put through The Boss distortion pedal. A history of modern distortion starts there. Punk was also turned into Funk with his first group The Pop Group. Check out the new doco about this man, because of Mark Stewart a lot of us have been Hypnotised.

Sunday 20th Playlist

Club spaces were once vital, interesting places where 60’s styled happenings exploded around the bass bin speaker stack (or is that an ecstacy fulled flashback). People dancing with each other—not pointed in one unified DJ direction.

Vintage Cuts/Jazz show host Michael D remarked to me after today’s set that I should remember this is Christchurch, New Zealand, meaning that provincial towns would probably be more apt to take disco/floor social aesthetic aspiration to the haybarn. Disco funkin’ cow poke.

Remember that swinger Jerry Cornelious… the hip dude in swinging London… 24 hour party people of another kind.

Sunday 13th Playplaylist

I remember being in a Sydney bar called Daddy’s one time, one sunday night. The long aching mixes—coming from the bus-stop styled DJ booth—were being played by the unassuming Robert Racic.

That was the night somebody haphazardly left a large brown cube of fudge on the bar. Everybody in that place (barmen too) came alive that night… green felt pool table ambient light and leather.

Hey Robert Racic
