BTW A Simulacrum Of Distress

Posted in Disco Discourse on August 11, 2008 by lately

We live in distressing times. Take for example, distressed jeans. Perhaps when I say ‘take’, I mean ‘take’ them off the shelf… because that’s probably the only work those jeans are ever gonna experience. Yet they look like you have been workin’ workin’ workin’. Thats why they look so ripped and frayed—some even have a yellow kinda stain/tinge (workin’ so hard you pissed yer’ self).

In short, distressed is admirable because worn looks used and used is good right? It means you have used it and it still works and you worked hard for it all this time and yet it still works. But you never lifted a finger. Facial cosmetica aside there must be a ‘Post-New’ emanating. The add scratch and crackle software to digital and now, a worn (sic distressed) record sleeve. Is new-now not so good as ‘old’ ‘then’ ‘back-when’ ‘in the day’ ‘old school’… huh? Lookin’ good!

Lost In Music Because There Is Too Much Chrome & Glass

The LED light spectacle display that was the Bejing Olympic opening has paved the way for nightclub disco interiors. Surely now it’s just a matter of time before people will dance in massive LED lined cubes. Can this be the “One World One Dream” promise which headlines the Olympic website? Maybe the dream is a vaseline smeared screen of shopping utopia—for everybody that is. Maybe the dream is a silver shoulder padded space suit.
