The Central Sounds promo promise is that the show is a ‘Journey Into Sound’—the ambiguity, the scope right now. So why the funk? Actually, why not the funk? From Hendrix to The Glitch Mob, The Afro American Sonic Surrealistic Pillow makes the connection between brain and booty, with a feedback loop to Africa via Brixton on a Jamaican tip (umm, and Afrika Bambatta and The Soul Sonic Force). So it’s not just about Mr White Uptight. Our Christchurch is a very conservative town… but underneath the cats exist. That’s right It’s as dry as a Cracker baby… and props to all of us here who use music to unite us in spirit beyond the other sociological freak out.

However, the above BS does not explain how The Dazz Band’s ‘Joy Stick’ (Fanks Jimbo) got in the playlist. It could’ve been Freak-A-Zoid—Midnight Star. Joystick is a good example of where the current 80’s synth schtick could end up if it bothers to mysteriously gel into serious expression of emotion, think for example, a heartbroken Flock Of Seagulls.

No, but seriously, there’s a war out there in the territory of genre naming and there are crimes being committed—it’s a Post Structuralist nightmare. Electro for the purist… I mean Electro in essence was that moment just after Afrika Bambatta and The Soul Sonic Force right? What is odd is that the current and recent past (3-4 years?) term and use of the phrase Electro denotes no reference to that strong influential and authentic period of Electro (and Arthur Baker). Felix the Housekat should know better. Hey, what am I tryin’ to say here… Could be that Dance Dee Jay’s became instantly irrelevant when they started using terminology like ‘HardBag’. Even the term ‘Minimal’ has a smug self righteous White Anglo Saxon Protestant feel/(and ethic? to it. Enough already.
